Karen is a California State licensed Marriage, Family Therapist, and a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress. She graduated out of Santa Clara University with her Masters in MFT counseling & psychology in 1992. Her clinical focus is in the treatment of duty-induced PTSD of all types for Fire, Medics, Lifeguard and Police. She specializes in treatment of post incident trauma following lethal contact / deadly encounters for Law Enforcement and the Military assets.

Along with an array of cross discipline trainings Karen is one of the rare civilian graduates out of the Force Science Research Institute’s Investigation course. Both weapons and tactics trained in areas such as public order, close protection and intelligence / source handling, Karen integrates these skills into clinical treatment as well as tactical team / commander trainings. She’s trained security advisors and operational assets within the Middle East as well as police SWAT, organizational psychologists, and tactical advisors.

Debbie Barber is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with families, adolescents, couples and individuals. She received her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Palo Alto University in 2013.

Debbie provides a safe place to share issues of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, loneliness, grief and loss, self-esteem challenges, and relationship concerns with self or others. Her approach is strength-based, heart-based, and client centered. Working collaboratively, she sees and honors the uniqueness of each individual and family, walking alongside them towards healing and wellness to reach their life goals and dreams. Using the principles of Psychodynamic theory, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), Gestalt Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, Positive Discipline and Triple P Parenting, she supports people in the integration of body, mind, heart, and soul. With couples, she draws from the work and techniques of John Gottman, and teaches couples effective communication skills.

Her training includes work in the Pajaro Valley School District in high schools and elementary schools for over 15 years, initially as a substitute school teacher, and subsequently as a counselor providing mental health services for children and families. She is trained as a mobile crisis counselor working with suicidal and homicidal youth, and has counseled adolescents in recovery from addiction. She has an extensive background as a certified massage therapist with 22 years experience in bodywork therapy. 

Debbie lives in Capitola. She has two married sons, a Pediatrician, MD, and a professional athlete. Living around the corner, she feels blessed to have two energetic grandsons, and a third on the way, who are the delight of her heart. Debbie is a member of  St. Joseph's Catholic Community and is involved in several ministries.

Education

Kathryn (Katy) Keithly holds a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology, an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Educational Psychology. She has a State certification in School Psychology, is a licensed Educational Psychologist (#3485) and is a Board Certified Sport Psychologist. Katy got her start in Psychology at Cal State Monterey Bay were she graduated with a B.A and was the captain of CSUMB’s women’s golf team for four years. Katy also has been riding horses since she was five and competed throughout the United States.

Experience

Katy held several positions in the San Francisco Bay Area & Monterey Bay Area since 2006 which included Program Manager for a preschool Special Education program. She currently consults and conducts assessments within the greater Monterey Bay Area in an effort to improve student and athletic services. In addition to counseling, Katy provides in-service and training on behavior management for parents and teachers. Katy's participation in and focus on sports has given her insight into the value that sports can provide in building self-esteem in students with learning disabilities. In fact, the focus of Katy's Masters and Doctoral research was centered around the positive impact that sports can make on learning and overall educational development. As a certified Sports Psychologist, Katy can also provide assistance to athletes looking to improve their mental edge.

Before COVID-19 Katy taught at Cal State Monterey Bay in the Special Education Department, teaching Psycho- Educational assessment course. Recently, Katy completed a Neuropsychological assessment certification through Cal Berkeley. She now offers Neuropsychological Assessment as part of her specialty.

During her free time she enjoys going to the beach with her husband and young daughters, golfing and riding horses.

Kristen Claassen is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist working with individuals, families and couples. She received her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Bethany University in 2010 and became licensed in 2012. Her approaches are tailored to the unique needs of clients, and she utilizes a number of orientations including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Internal Family Systems. She can also counsel from a faith perspective which means she believes that God has made us each unique and valuable, that He loves us no matter what and that anyone is capable of change.

Kristen formerly was the Clinical Director at the Parents Center, a local nonprofit whose mission is to help Santa Cruz County’s most needy kids and families through providing mental health and parenting support. Kristen’s career has also included working at the Santa Cruz County Jail on the crisis intervention team counseling men and women. She has experience supporting clients with substance abuse, codependency, depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, parent-child concerns, and marital issues.

Kristen and her husband Brian have lived locally since they married in 1988. They raised their two children in Scotts Valley and are now enjoying their daughter in law and granddaughter. Kristen knows firsthand how supportive therapy can be as addiction directly impacted her marriage and family.

Dr. Joel Stiles is a licensed clinical psychologist who currently serves as the Clinical Director of New Life Community Services in Santa Cruz.  Joel previously worked for Santa Cruz County Integrated Behavioral Health delivering psychological services in a primary care setting and providing consultation for medical providers. He has also worked for Monterey County Children’s Behavioral Health where he provided evaluations and reports for the Dependency Court followed by recommending and providing treatment for families.  Beginning in 2013 he served the Juvenile Court system evaluating and treating youth charged with sex offenses.

He began his career at New Life Community Services in 2001 as an addiction counselor and later completed his B.A. in Addiction Studies at Bethany University. In 2006 he obtained his masters in Marital and Family Therapy from Western Seminary with an emphasis on integration of Psychology and Christian faith.  He then completed a second masters in Clinical Psychology as well as a Ph.D. at Palo University with an emphasis in Forensic Psychology.

As a psychologist, Joel is a generalist with specializations in adolescent behavioral health, as well as anxiety, trauma and addictive behavior.

Hi! I am Reagan and have been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 2003. I hold an MS in Clinical Psychology and BS in Addiction Studies, from Bethany University. Prior to those degrees, I earned my BA in education, from Judson University.

Most recently, and for nearly a decade, I have been providing care in an outpatient setting for Kaiser. My role has been multi-faceted, serving a culturally and gender diverse population, both individually and via groups for patients (primarily adults) in early recovery from addiction, as well as their family members who have been impacted by the disease. This setting has included many dually diagnosed people seeking support around codependency, harm reduction (regarding substance abuse), and abstinence-based recovery treatment, with a 12 Step focus. 

During my earlier years professionally, I interned at Relational Resources, I supported couples, families, and individuals struggling with codependency, depression, anxiety, and various types of family and relational challenges. I have missed family therapy and couples work, as that was not integrated into the clinical picture in my years at Kaiser Addiction Medicine Recovery Services. I look forward to once again walking alongside people to meet them and guide them, whether it is to focus on a relationship, complex family dynamics or specific individual diagnoses.

Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in higher education, living amongst and leading college students as resident director. It provided me opportunities to assist young adults in communication, identity formation, and negotiating both family and friend relationships. It was also a unique opportunity to practice my skills in crisis management.

On a personal level, I am a mother of an elementary-aged only child and have been married for nearly 25 years. We struggled with years of infertility, so this is an issue I understand intimately, and am willing to guide others who have this as part of their story. Additionally, I grew up with the family disease of alcoholism, and lost my father when I was young. This has much to do with my journey in Al-anon for many years, and I do believe 12 Step recovery is an important tool for anyone impacted by addictions. More recently, I have participated and been blessed by the ministry of Griefshare, after losing my mother to cancer. Grief is a part of my story as well, and an area I am willing to provide support for my clients. 

My family has lived in Santa Cruz County for 20 years, and we absolutely love this area. I love hiking, trail running and being outdoors with my dog, friends, family or alone as much as possible!

Emily Cross has her Bachelors degree in Addiction Studies and she graduated from Western Seminary with a Masters degree in Marriage Family Therapy in 2007. She received her license in 2013. Emily has many years of experience working with a diverse range of people: teens and adults struggling with addiction and mental illness, adults with developmental disabilities and co-occurring mental illness, kids and adults with physical disabilities and adults in an outpatient hospital setting with mental illness.

As a licensed clinician, Emily applies Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), both tools to help empower someone to manage their emotions and live effective lives. Emily also utilizes Gottman theory in working with couples.

Being a mom since 2014, Emily is passionate about attachment theory and polyvagal theory, both addressing the parents’ relationship with their children. Emily cares deeply about kids and teens and helping them learn to manage their big emotions and thrive.

Emily has been married since 2003 and has two boys, whom she is homeschooling. She loves nature, camping and children’s literature.
